Most employees are on the lookout for or actively seeking a new position as an increasing number of workers feel detached from their jobs, according to a new survey.
The Gallup poll, released Tuesday and conducted among full-time and part-time working adults, found that 51 percent of surveyed workers are watching for or looking for a new job. Only 18 percent of U.S. employees reported being “extremely” satisfied with their current job.
The workers’ satisfaction with their employers has dropped to a record low, and job seekers are looking for new opportunities at the highest rate since 2015, the pollster noted.
Gallup listed five changes organizations and companies have made in the last few years that have contributed to the growing dissatisfaction, with the first one being rapid organizational change.
A lot of organizations have experienced massive turnover and hiring sprees after 2020, with 73 percent of employees saying their workplace had gone through a version of disruptive change in the last year. Gallup also noted that hybrid and remote work changes have had a lasting impact on workers’ connection with organizational mission.
Other reasons for dissatisfaction were employees finding changes in customers’ expectations since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic; employers and new employees not aligning with expectations; and lack of confidence leaders have in their performance management systems.
Gallup shared two potential solutions. The first would be to reset expectations and priorities, noting only 45 percent of employees know what is expected of them at work.
The second was finding a better way of connecting the workers with the organization’s mission and purpose as another way to counter the increasing dissatisfaction.
The survey was conducted Oct. 23-Nov. 5 among 22,558 employees. The margin of error was 1.2 percentage points.
